HOWARD COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS: Willow Bend stream restoration project to begin

Blueprint hardhat

Howard County Department of Public Works issued the following announcement on Nov. 19.

A Howard County construction project to restore and stabilize approximately 1,150 linear feet of stream channel near Gray Rock Drive in Ellicott City is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, December 3. The unnamed tributary to the Little Patuxent River has been heavily impacted by stormwater and has eroded significantly.

The project will include grading of the streambanks and placement of riffle grade control structures and woody material along the stream banks for erosion protection. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by March 2019.

While the project is not expected to impact the flow of vehicular traffic in the area, the sidewalks in front of the construction entrances on Gray Rock Drive and Blue River Court will be closed. Signs will be posted in the area to alert motorists and pedestrians of the project and sidewalk closures.

Funded through the County’s Watershed Protection and Restoration Fund, this project will reduce the amount of sediment flowing downstream. The project will also help prevent the streambanks from further eroding and improve the ecological functions of the channel and floodplain through revegetation of the riparian buffer areas. Finally, the project will protect the sanitary sewer infrastructure along the stream.
