HOWARD COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT: Howard County hosting Apprenticeship Career Fair

Career

Howard County Health Department issued the following announcement on Oct. 3.

The Howard County Office of Workforce Development will host an Apprenticeship Career Fair on Friday, October 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Columbia Workforce Center, located at 7161 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite D in Columbia. Industries represented at the fair include electrical, HVAC, emergency management, IT, plumbing, and automotive. Howard County Government also will provide information about its new apprenticeship program for trade positions in the Department of Public Works. Those apprenticeships will begin in spring 2019.

“As we continue to lose experienced tradespeople in the job market to retirement and attrition, it is important that we find ways to encourage the transfer of these skills and solid career opportunities to a new generation,” said County Executive Allan H. Kittleman. “I look forward to launching the county apprentice program next year.”

Apprenticeships fill an industry need for in-demand occupations offering paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Participants in registered apprenticeship programs earn a nationally recognized certification upon completion of the apprenticeship, as well as advanced wages as skills increase.

According to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, apprenticeships result in a retention rate of 91 percent, and apprentices report high levels of motivation, satisfaction, and loyalty. Program sponsors, by developing curriculums tailored to meet their company needs, gain employees that are highly-trained in crucial skill sets for their specific industry role.

“Many people and businesses are not aware of apprenticeship opportunities and the vast array of jobs associated with them,” said Francine Trout, Administrator of the Howard County Office of Workforce Development. “We want to provide the community with the opportunity to learn more about apprenticeships directly from employers and become involved in these promising opportunities.”
