Howard County Health Department issued the following announcement on Sept. 24.

Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman and the members of the Commission on Disabilities will honor the achievements of Howard County residents with disabilities, their advocates, employers and service providers at the Commission’s 24th annual awards program. The program honors the outstanding efforts of individuals and organizations that advance full participation in community life for all people and promote the spirit and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other disability rights laws. In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Rylin Rodgers, the Director of Public Policy for the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, will serve as guest speaker.

16th Annual Celebration of Sports

Tuesday, October 16, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Turf Valley Resort, 2700 Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City

Join Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman and the Department of Recreation & Parks as they honor people in our community who have made a difference through sports. The event will include the induction of five new members into the Howard County Community Sports Hall of Fame and the presentation of the GoodSports awards. 20th Annual 50+EXPO

Friday, October 19, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road, Columbia

Join Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman for the 20th annual 50+EXPO. The year’s event will feature more than 170 vendors and exhibitors of interest to adults age 50 and older, their families, caregivers and friends. There will be a number of seminars and an onsite health fair offering free screenings and free flu shot vaccines. The Capitol Steps perform at 2:00 p.m. in The Jim Rouse Theatre and attendees are asked to make a $5 donation for show tickets; all proceeds will benefit the Vivian Reid Community Fund, which provides emergency financial assistance to older adults in Howard County. Howard County Conference on Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention: A Call to Action

Friday, October 26, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Join Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman and the Human Trafficking Prevention Coordinating Council for an awareness and prevention event to combat human trafficking in our region. Event highlights include a Survivor's Panel Presentation; a keynote by Marian Hatcher, Policy Analyst and Victim Advocate, Cook County, Illinois Sheriff's Office and a national expert on human trafficking and prevention; three breakout sessions, plus a Sworn Officers’ Symposium. FREE; seating is limited.

Truck or Treat

Saturday, October 27, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Get in gear for a "wheely fun" day to celebrate Halloween! Kids of all ages are invited to join Howard County’s Department of Recreation & Parks for this year’s “Truck or Treat.” Come trick-or-treat at trucks, tractors and emergency vehicles, enjoy live music, children’s activities, hayrides, food trucks and more. Cost is $2.00 for ages 2 and up; however, the event is free for kids under 2. Tickets on sale now; for information about tickets call 410-313-4840. In case of inclement weather the day of the event, call 410-313-4452 (choose option #1) to check on the event’s status.
