Village of Chevy Chase Parks and Green Spaces Committee met Sept. 6.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

Attendance; Susan Dixon, Susan Kilborn, Co-Chair, Margo Kingston, Co- Chair, Jorie Jurgens, Elissa Leonard, Board Liaison and Ellen Sands, Municipal Operations Coordinator

Margo Kingston brought the meeting to order at 4 PM. First business was a recap of spring planting in the Buffer and a discussion of what remains to be done before winter. The Mondo grass planted by the Tiffany entrance to the Village is being eaten by either rabbits or deer. Two alternative ground covers, Vinca and liorope were recommended.

It was discussed whether it would be useful to put deer or rabbit repellant on the Mondo grass now and watch to see if that discourages them, before replacing it with plants that are not attractive to the animals.

RH&K, the engineering firm the village has hired, has recommended that The Village modify the inlets of the flood overflow grates to stem the water run off and debris on Buffer walkways after severe rains. These inlets are located between Center and Park Streets.

Residents taking short cuts to get to the walkway going toward Center and Grove Streets have worn a path at the entrance to the Village. It has been recommended that the Public Works department install flagstone stepping stones along the pop-up pathway. These would give a clear path connecting the entrance with the walkway going south.

To address the water runoff along the walkways, the Control box on the sprinkler system has been set at 5:00 AM and the grading will be changed. The idea of laying pine straw mulch in areas where grass does not grow has been tabled until it is ascertained that the above adjustments to stem water run-off are working effectively.

A resident on Belmont Street suggested that native ferns be planted at the foot of Sak’s parking lot walls. The best ferns to thrive there are being researched by the Committee.

The Brookville Road Dog Park will have its grand opening on Wednesday, September 12 from 4:30 – 6:30 PM. There will be giveaways, drinks, snacks, pet photos and a wading pool for dogs. There will also be a Pet ID Program sign-up.

We have been invited to join the Conservation Committee and other Village organizations to sponsor a talk at the Village Hall on Sept 20, from 7:00 pm. The speaker will talk about lawns without pesticides. The talk is “Beyond Pesticides.”

Shana Davis-Cook, the Village Manager, suggested more seating in the False Cypress Triangle on Laurel Parkway in front of the Village Hall. During the discussion it was suggested that a pair of Windamere chairs (found in the Country Classic brochure) would be appropriate for the space as there is already a Windemere bench placed at the side of this public right of way.

Alissa Leonard said how important it was for the chairs and benches to be ADA compliant. She also encouraged consistency in style with other Village benches.

Margo Kingston reported that she was taking pictures of all our benches in parks and green spaces. She suggested that a bench (with an arm dividing the space) be placed at Grove Street like the one slated to be placed at Center Street in the Buffer.

The discussion on benches continued as Margo noted that there is a need to repair one of the benches in the Hesketh St. Right of Way. The memorial bench to Merle Tuve and his wife is bent out of shape and does not rest properly on the ground.

The year’s future meetings will be at 4:00 PM at the Village Hall on the following dates:

Thursday, October 4 @ 4:00 PM Thursday, November 29 “

In 2019 we will meet on these dates: Thursday, March 7 @ 4:00 PM Thursday, April 4 @ 4:00 PM Thursday, May 2 # 4:00 PM
