HOWARD COUNTY COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND SERVICES: Howard County Office of Transportation releases draft US 1 Safety Evaluation report, announces public meetings to present findings

Report

Howard County Community Resources and Services issued the following announcement on Sept. 18.

The Howard County Office of Transportation today released a draft report containing the findings and recommendations of the US 1 Safety Evaluation. The Safety Evaluation is a project to identify short-term actions to improve safety for people traveling along US 1 in Howard County, particularly walking and biking. The corridor has been historically commercial and industrial but has more recently seen new residential and mixed-use development accompanied by higher levels of pedestrian and bicycle activity.

“We have been engaged with the public throughout this project because it is important for us to understand what residents need and the impacts of various options,” said County Executive Allan H. Kittleman. “We want to make sure we move forward in ways that will benefit them and the surrounding community.”

The evaluation identified four focus areas for detailed study and developed recommendations for each focus area, preliminary concepts for safety improvements at five locations, and corridor-wide recommendations. The report also identifies potential funding sources.

The report is posted at www.howardcountymd.gov/US1Safety, along with an online comment form. In addition, the Office of Transportation and Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will present and discuss the findings of the evaluation at two public meetings:
