HOPEWORKS OF HOWARD COUNTY: Stop blaming the victims of sexual assault
0Comments

HopeWorks of Howard County issued the following announcement on Aug. 23.

There are many reasons to balk at Friday’s sentencing of a former Houston doctor who was charged with sexually assaulting a heavily sedated patient in 2013 — the light sentence of 10 years of probation, which brought national attention to the case, for example.

Or the lengthy investigation process that allowed two years to pass from the time of the assault until the arrest of the doctor, Dr. Shafeeq Sheikh. Or his defense lawyer’s courtroom plea for mercy on behalf of his family and shattered dreams.

But what is arguably the most infuriating aspect of this whole demoralizing case is the extent to which the survivor has been blamed for her own assault.
