Ascension Saint Agnes announced on March 31 that it will open a new primary care practice in Edmondson Village, West Baltimore, with the facility expected to begin serving patients in fall 2026. The announcement was made during a community event held on March 30, where construction progress and plans for the new site were shared.
The upcoming location will feature a 5,000-square-foot facility designed to serve more than 4,300 patients and accommodate over 9,300 annual visits. Beau Higginbotham, CEO and President of Ascension Saint Agnes, said, “For years, community members in West Baltimore have struggled to access primary care services and have faced a higher risk for poor health outcomes, including chronic diseases and lower life expectancy.” He added that the new practice “demonstrates our commitment to improving access to healthcare services and providing compassionate, patient-centered care to those who need it most.”
West Baltimore residents experience higher rates of diabetes and hypertension compared to other areas of Maryland. They also rely on hospital care at greater rates than other communities. More than half of hospital patients from this area are covered by Medicaid. The city’s primary care ratio stands at just 30 percent—lower than surrounding counties—which highlights an ongoing shortage of providers willing or able to treat low-income patients or accept Medicaid.
To address these challenges before the opening of the permanent site, Ascension Saint Agnes has operated a mobile health unit serving West and Southwest Baltimore since December 2023. The forthcoming Edmondson Village location aims to further close gaps in access by offering chronic disease management services as well as behavioral health support and connections to social resources. A multidisciplinary team—including physicians; advanced practice providers; nurse case managers; social workers; behavioral health professionals; and diabetes educators—will staff the clinic.
Other Ascension Saint Agnes primary care sites across Baltimore City as well as Catonsville, Columbia, Elkridge, and Elliott City offer preventive services while managing chronic conditions or connecting patients with specialty care when needed.
“Our new primary care practice is more than a facility—it’s a promise of better access, better care and healthier futures for West Baltimore community members,” said Higginbotham.
The project receives funding from the Maryland Department of Health along with support from the Health Services Cost Review Commission through its Episode Quality Improvement-Primary Care Program (EQIP-PC). The clinic will be located within the redeveloped Edmondson Village Shopping Center currently being revitalized by TREND.
